Australian weight loss + bariatric FAQ

The questions every Australian weighing bariatric surgery or GLP-1 medication should ask — cost, eligibility, ANZMOSS surgeons, Mounjaro vs Wegovy, telehealth options. Answered with real numbers + links to the relevant tool or guide.

Bariatric surgery

How much does bariatric surgery cost in Australia?

+
Sleeve gastrectomy $18,000–$25,000 fully self-pay. With private health insurance: $8,000–$18,000 out-of-pocket. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass $20,000–$30,000 fully self-pay. Adelaide is consistently Australia's lowest-cost capital. Public hospital bariatric surgery exists but 2–5 year waitlists are typical. See our health-fund coverage guide.

Am I eligible for bariatric surgery?

+
Australian guidelines: BMI 35+ with weight-related health conditions (Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, severe joint disease, NASH), OR BMI 40+ regardless. You'll need assessment by a bariatric surgeon, dietitian, psychologist + sometimes endocrinologist. Most surgeons require evidence of previous medical weight-loss attempts. See our BMI calculator.

Which procedure should I choose — sleeve, bypass or band?

+
Sleeve gastrectomy is ~60–70% of Australian primary bariatric procedures — best for most adults with BMI 35–50, minimal anatomical complexity. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (15–20%) is recommended for severe reflux + diabetes-dominant patients. Lap-band is now rarely performed as a primary procedure — long-term data is poor + revision rates high. Mini-bypass / SADI-S are advanced procedures at specialist centres only.

What does ANZMOSS membership mean?

+
Australia + NZ Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society — the peak professional society for bariatric surgeons. Membership requires FRACS qualification, current bariatric practice + adherence to ANZMOSS Position Statements. ~85–90% of high-volume Australian bariatric surgeons are members. Strongest professional credential signal short of AHPRA registration.

How important is surgical volume?

+
Documented volume-outcome relationship. Surgeons performing 100+ sleeve gastrectomies / bypasses per year have measurably better complication rates than surgeons performing under 50/year. Ask directly: "How many of this specific procedure have you personally done in the last 12 months?" A high-volume surgeon will answer comfortably. A vague answer is a signal.

What about hospital + multidisciplinary team?

+
For bariatric surgery, hospital matters as much as surgeon. Look for: dedicated bariatric ward, in-house bariatric dietitian + psychologist, 24/7 anaesthetist coverage with bariatric experience, established leak-rescue + bleed-rescue protocols. Epworth Eastern (Australia's largest dedicated bariatric centre), Westmead Private, Hollywood Private + similar are the gold-standard hospitals. See our pre-op checklist.

GLP-1 medications (Wegovy + Mounjaro)

What's the difference between Wegovy + Mounjaro?

+
Wegovy (semaglutide, Novo Nordisk) is a once-weekly GLP-1 agonist. Trials show 15% body weight loss over 68 weeks. Mounjaro (tirzepatide, Eli Lilly) is a once-weekly dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist. Trials show 21% body weight loss over 72 weeks — currently a TGA-approved weight-management medicine available in Australia. Both cost $400–$600/month privately. Side effects (nausea, fatigue) tend to be milder with Mounjaro.

Am I eligible for GLP-1 medication?

+
TGA-approved for BMI 27+ with weight-related comorbidities (Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, dyslipidaemia) OR BMI 30+. PBS subsidy applies to a narrow subset (Type 2 diabetes only currently). Most patients pay full private cost. See our BMI calculator.

How much does Mounjaro cost in Australia?

+
$400–$600/month privately depending on dose (2.5mg through 15mg). Higher doses are not more expensive — pricing is per pen, not per mg. Annual cost $5,000–$7,000 — comparable to bariatric surgery's break-even within 3–4 years if continued indefinitely. See our cost calculator.

Can I get GLP-1 via telehealth?

+
Yes — Juniper, Pilot, Mosh, Eucalyptus, Hers all offer telehealth GLP-1 prescriptions for $300–$500/month including coaching + dietitian support. Independent reviews show similar weight-loss outcomes to in-person clinics (medication is the primary driver). Best for motivated self-starters; in-person clinics suit patients with complex comorbidities or who want closer follow-up.

How do I switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?

+
Most prescribers wash out 1–2 weeks then start Mounjaro at 2.5mg + titrate. Don't self-switch — coordinate with prescriber. Same-day overlap is not advised. See our GLP-1 starter kit + side-effects timeline.

What about supply shortages?

+
Periodic shortages affect both Wegovy + Mounjaro globally + Australia. TGA publishes shortage notices. Larger compound pharmacies + telehealth providers tend to manage supply better than small independents. See our supply tracker for current state by chemist.
